Soma
About
The restaurant, located in a historic building, features a menu with straightforward, everyday dishes alongside creative and unexpected combinations. The core elements are food, wine, cocktails, music, and art.
Soma is a restaurant housed in an old Moscow mansion with a cozy courtyard on Petrovsky Boulevard. In Vedic culture, 'soma' was mentioned as an elixir of happiness, an ethnic ritual drink that helped people connect with the gods and achieve absolute happiness. Our 'soma' represents love, joy, and the desire to share it, and it is expressed through food, drinks, music, and art. The location was chosen for a reason. In pre-revolutionary Moscow, this place hosted significant events, from the birthdays of Turgenev and Dostoevsky to Tchaikovsky's wedding and Maxim Gorky's celebration of the premiere of the play "The Lower Depths." The project architect, Gosha Aigunyan (KB "Strelka," Sol), created a Janus-faced space that combines a massive, deliberately unrefined "past hall," where the legacy of the 19th century is preserved in the form of columns, vaulted ceilings, and brickwork, with a calm, futuristic "future hall" featuring an arch-portal, a floating light strip, and a mirrored sphere. Separating them is the "present hall," from which you can observe the chefs at work in the open kitchen. Chef Artem Chudnenko (Alice, Muse) uses a blend of styles and emphasizes local ingredients, especially those that have mysteriously disappeared from restaurant menus: pattypan squash, celery root, pearl barley. The food is diverse, vibrant, and yet comfortable, evoking warm feelings and sometimes pleasant surprises – this is what we strive for in our menu. Menu excerpts: Pattypan squash ceviche with tomatoes and avocado (450 ₽); Dorade with ginger and horseradish sauce (700 ₽); Celery root with pearl barley and mushroom cream (950 ₽); Young cabbage with avocado and fennel (550 ₽); Cream soup with braised cabbage, Pecorino cheese, and walnuts (700 ₽); Chicken thigh with asparagus, shallots, and ginger sauce (1100 ₽). Head bartender Mikhail Pugachev (Mitzva Bar, Less Sugar) develops the cocktail menu in three directions: fruits and berries, herbs and roots, and mushrooms (fermentation). Each cocktail has its own number, and with each new collection, we don't reset the count, but continue it, preserving the most popular drinks in our "archive." Head sommelier Olga Erokhina ("Na Vina," Grape Wine) has curated an impressive wine list, most of which is dynamically updated. The main focus is on champagne, from prestigious houses to "recoltant" wines imported into Russia under quotas. A special feature of the selection is our own sparkling Soma, made with the help of our friends from the Lefkada Valley. Art director Oleg Tsui (Squat 3/4, Lado) is responsible for the cultural program. DJ sets, live shows, and experimental performances by the best artists in the city on Fridays and Saturdays, and live jazz on Sundays. One of the focuses is on art in various forms from contemporary artists, and diverse events ranging from lectures on topical issues to intimate wine tastings and courtyard barbecues.
