About
"Herring and Coffee" is a legendary establishment in Nizhny Novgorod, evolving from a cozy haven for the creative intelligentsia to a venue with intellectual evenings.
"Herring and Coffee" is more than just a bar; it's a living legend of Nizhny Novgorod, whose history is closely intertwined with the history of the city and its creative community. Its emergence in the early 2000s was driven by the need for a comfortable place for the local newspaper's editorial staff and their like-minded colleagues – a place where they could informally discuss ideas, socialize in a relaxed atmosphere, escape the hustle and bustle, and enjoy the bohemian lifestyle. Initially, "Herring" was an intellectual oasis. Unique events took place within the modest walls of the unassuming space: regular screenings of silent films accompanied by live music, creating a special atmosphere of nostalgia and retro; public editorial meetings where you could learn about the latest news firsthand; conversations with well-known journalists and intellectuals of the city; and important meetings and discussions took place at a specially designated table for the editor-in-chief. During this time, not only colleagues from the editorial staff visited the bar, but also well-known writers, artists, and musicians in the city, making the establishment a true center of creative life. In those years, a principled approach to forming the audience played an important role. The events were geared towards intellectual elitism, which contributed to the creation of a special atmosphere of warm and heartfelt communication. Charity auctions of antique items were held, and the proceeds went to support rural libraries. The urban planning project "Enclosed," developed within the walls of the bar, attracted the attention of architects and urban planners, became a catalyst for many city initiatives, and significantly influenced the development of Nizhny Novgorod. The walls of the bar are adorned with the famous drawing of a herring, created by the renowned artist Oleg Vdovin. Initially, his signature was large and prominent, but at the request of the first art director, it was altered to emphasize the drawing itself rather than the artist's name. Even the unusual door that extends to the ceiling has its own amusing story; it was "inspired" by a local car wash. On Sundays, the bar hosted gastronomic master classes where anyone could learn to prepare dishes from the menu under the guidance of the chef. As Nizhny Novgorod grew in popularity as a tourist destination, "Herring and Coffee" became more open to everyone. In addition to the intellectual evenings, live music performances, vibrant dance parties, lively karaoke, and performances by guest artists were added. Even in the summer, when Rozhdestvenskaya Street was not yet fully pedestrianized, the parties spilled out onto the street, becoming part of the city's life. Today, "Herring and Coffee" is an iconic place, a symbol of the bohemian spirit of Nizhny Novgorod, which has preserved its unique atmosphere while becoming accessible to a wide range of visitors. It is a true legend, and its story continues.
