This 17th-century village inn has been sympathetically restored by Cumbrian born-and-bred couple Kevin and Nicola Tickle – and the locals are loving them for it, with the front bar still open for people to pop in for a pint and freshly made pie. In the rear restaurant, Kevin conjures up a tasting menu inspired by the seasons, the surroundings, his imagination and his local foraging knowledge – featuring playfully described dishes that reveal real depth and originality. All tables are served at the same time except on Sundays, so be prepared to arrive promptly.
